AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) Profile

AKC CAR was founded in 1995 to help reunite lost pets with their owners. With this goal in mind, AKC CAR provides 24-hour recovery services for pets that are identified with a microchip, tattoo, or AKC CAR collar tag. AKC CAR, located in Raleigh, NC, is an affiliate of the American Kennel Club and is the nation's largest non-profit recovery service provider.

All animals are eligible for enrollment in AKC CAR regardless of identification brand or type, microchip, tattoo or AKC CAR collar tag. The AKC CAR database stores over 3.9 million enrollment records and has been used to perform more than 340,000 recoveries. Although dogs make up the majority of the database, cats, horses, birds, and 31 other companion and exotic species are enrolled.

AKC CAR has built strong relationships with non-profit shelters, veterinarians, animal agencies, field volunteers, professionals, and pet enthusiasts. AKC CAR works closely with other national identification databases and is a valuable resource for the recovery of lost pets. The program continues to develop key relationships with individuals and organizations in the animal welfare and recovery fields. These relationships allow AKC CAR to be the national recovery service of choice.

We invite those new to AKC CAR to read through our web site and join us in our ongoing efforts to reunite owners with their lost pets. These are some of the ways that you can help:

  • If you are a pet owner, protect your loved one with an AKC CAR collar tag or enrollment of your microchip or tattoo in the AKC CAR recovery system.

  • If you are a veterinarian, protect your clients' pets with the very best with our AKC CAR ID System microchip and recovery services.

  • If you are a shelter, humane society or rescue group, chip your adopted pets with the AKC CAR ID System microchip and enroll them with the nation's largest non-profit recovery service, AKC CAR.

  • If you are a breed club or animal hospital, sponsor a microchip clinic as a community service and chip the pets with the AKC CAR ID System microchip and enroll them with AKC CAR.
